Sonnet 19
Stacking
cord wood in the late October light brings
out my
darkside. Hand-to-log-to-stack, start thinking
about
scorpions dipped in whisky, invoke Tecumseh
who cursed
presidents, knowing inertia is my destination
my shadow,
everything a trigger. But something this rhythmic
ritualistic
& repetitive should be more calming, primal
to the soul.
This
is when I should smile
thinking
snow is grandmother to the desert or how Miles
blew
PRAYER (oh
Dr Jesus) all those years ago or look at my
brindle pup
gnawing on a deer antler - But as the sun fades
& a breeze
rises with
the moon, its just me & this rick of green
Rowe mesa
pine,
hand-to-log-to-stack, working
through the
dark, just a few paces from the house & when
I'm
done I
reassure the night, don't worry, I'll be back.
