San Francisco Review: Kelly's Mission Rock is one of
the most populalr restaurants in San
Francisco. Located in the China Basin
(right off the end of the Embarcadero),
the restaurant was completely rebuilt on
the site of an old, very popular
dive-on-the-docks. Known for decades as
simply "Mission Rock", couples
and lovers of the old waterfront made
this the destination for weekend music
and rough grub. Well, rough and hidden in
those days.
Kelly's new Mission Rock
restaurant is anything but rough. It is
industrial modern. Contemporary lines and
bare metal accented with pine floors
and beamed ceilings are fully
complimented by the view of an old, busy
shipyard, the SBC Baseball Park and the
broad expanse of the bay. There is an
outside deck that runs the full length of
the restaurant, backed by high glass
windows with the full upper dining room
on the other side, making it the perfect
place for dining, rain or shine. There
are bars on either end of the main dining
room with TVs, where you can also eat,
ordering from an extensive bar menu.
Table diners find a wonderful selection
of typical American cuisine that is
beautifully presented and tastes as good
as it looks. Kelly's specializes in a
wide array of popular and original
cocktails. They offer a fairly extensive,
sophisticated selection of wine &
beer, imported & domestic.
Downstairs on the street/water
level there is a pool room and separate
casual café bar where you can order
relaxed hardy fare; cheeseburgers, fried
calamari, buffalo wings, fish and chips,
pizzas. You can also enjoy your meal
outside on the waterfront patio and deck.
For the sports enthusiast, numerous TVs
(13 in total) are located both inside and
outside on the waterfront patio.
Live music on the weekends. Call for the
calendar. Reservations recommended for
lunch & dinner, but not absolutely
necessary. With the ballpark nearby, and
the development of the Mission Bay
project bringing the old wharf district
into more of a place you want to go to,
Kelly's Mission Rock has become one of
the most popular destination restaurants
in San Francisco. For those who love the
bay, fresh air, and the ambiance of a
funky shipyard complimented by a
contemporary restaurant that serves
American fun-food, this is the place to
go. Sidewalk parking.
