Located in the financial district since 1990, Palio d'Asti can be included in the list of San Francisco's great historic restaurants. Palio d'Asti is named for the bareback horse race 'Il Palio' held once a year since medieval times in Asti, Italy. The interior is sophisticated and warm, centering around a view of the working chefs. The 7,000 square foot space achieves intimacy, The front dining room is highlighted by a dramatic triptych mural of 'Il Palio' commissioned by the founder Gianni Fassio, from well known local artist Marco Sassone.

Housed in a building built one year after the great earthquake of 1906, massive concrete pillars and quiet spaces evoke the streets and piazzas of Asti. Bright flags used for the Palio horse race are suspended overhead. There is a central, full bar, named "Enoteca della douja", after the famous wine competition that takes place in Asti each September. The restaurant's Enoteca offers over 180 wines, 30 available by the glass. The wine list focuses on Italian wines, and select California, Oregon and Washington varietals.

The cuisine is prepared by Chef/owner Daniel Scherotter, and reflects the best of Italy season by season, region by region. Some suggestions include: Insalta di Frutti Stagionali - the Chef's Signature Stonefruit Salad of Peaches, Plums, Cherries, Butter Lettuce, Arugula, Red Onions, Toasted Almonds, Black Peppered Sheep's Milk Cheese, and Nectarine Vinaigrette; Mezzelune alla Monferrina - House Made Almond and Fontina Filled Half Moon Ravioli in Broth with Spinach and White Truffle Oil; Scaloppine di Vitello 'al Vitellone - Sauteed Milk Fed Veal and Oysters with Smoked Veal Bacon and Pickled Peppers and Buckwheat Polenta; Cacciucco dal Marione - Chef's Favorite Tuscan Seafood Stew from Trattoria Marione in Florence, Seven Fruits of the Sea, Red Wine Tomato Broth, and Grilled Rosemary Bread. The Palio is famous for its housemade desserts by pastry chef Mimi Young. Any selection for their extensive list will please.
