 Best
of San Francisco Review
It was once
written by the famous San Francisco
Chronicle columnist, Herb Caen, oh so
many years ago, that you could "eat
in a different San Francisco restaurant
every day of the year...and still not
experience them all....". Since the
founding of Yerba Buena, the
original name for San Francisco,
restaurants, great, not so great and
otherwise have made this city famous for
their presence and a wild variety of
cuisine. But...seldom do we get to
experience a restaurant that offers a
cuisine, service and atmosphere of
absolute perfection. Roots is that
restaurant, for all the right reasons.
You could say it is the epitome of the
name Yerba Buena.
Located on the
ground floor of the newly constructed Orchard Garden
Hotel, the
first built from the ground up
"green", ecologically designed
lodging in the U.S., Roots has a
refreshing, contemporary atmosphere,
reminiscent of the current European flair
for simplicity and quality, with light
pine walls and muted green and yellow
accents that makes you feel like you're
in a garden atmosphere. The Executive
Chef, Russell Rummer, brings well
seasoned experience starting with his own
roots in Ohio, the heartland of America.
In keeping with the Orchard Garden
Hotel's origins, he offers cuisine
featuring seasonly available, organic
ingredients provided by local farmers,
seafood caught locally or flown in fresh,
Niman Ranch meats and a wide variety of
American cheeses. His American cuisine
features Mediterranean accents, often
playful in the juxtaposition of flavorful
ingredients. Chef Rummer also specializes
in creating incredible, memorable soups.
Desserts are created fresh daily by
pastry chef Irene Contreras. Their wine
list is excellent, featuring many local
Northern California small production
vineyards.
Located two blocks
up from Union Square, international
designer boutique shopping, great
department stores such as Tiffany's and
Neiman Marcus and catty-corner from the
Chinatown Gate, Roots is a terrific lunch
or dinner destination. Be sure to make reservations in advance for
this newly popular dining experience.
