CLASSIC
SAN FRANCISCO BAR / HISTORIC
BOHEMIAN (BEATNIK ?) LOCALE: North
Beach
SPECS
(not possessive or plural, as
this is the nickname for the
owner, Richard "I"m not
that other guy" Simmons) is
the perfect, grungy, original
Bohemian, Beatnik poet, artist's
(& otherwise) bar. And, A BAR
it is. Located in a tiny cul de
sac, between Pearl's Jazz Club
and Tosca Cafe, one can have a
lot of fun with the ambiance and
bar/club hopping atmosphere.
Also, right across the street
from Vesuvio's bar, and City
Light's Books, the original
location for Beat publications
and activities. In Specs', you
will find a genuine neighborhood
clientele, not much space,
original furnishings still in
place since 1968. The walls are
decorated with a wide variety of
memorabilia and scrimshaw
collectibles. Poetry readings are
sometimes held here. Expect a
lively, crowded, authentic
atmosphere. If you love poetry
& jazz, controversy, funky
people & draft beer, this is
one of the best San Francisco
places to wet your whistle.
